Gratitude

My brother called me last night.  He was frustrated with how things were going in his life.  He had a string of bad luck happen to him all at once, recently.  It started off with his dog cutting his paw on a piece of broken glass, and the subsequent six hundred dollar vet bill. The next day the freezer went on the fritz and stopped functioning, spoiling all the food and causing a stink. The last straw was when he discovered that the clothes washer would no longer drain, leaving the clothes in a sudsy soapy mess. My brother told me he had it, that nothing goes right in his life, that nobody can get ahead in todays world. Basically he was calling to vent.

I have been in this situation many times before, and so has most everyone else. Your car gets a flat tire, you miss the bus, your pet gets sick, or you or your children get sick.  Unforeseen bills arise from these unforeseen events. The frustration and fear that arises can be understandable. Humans crave predictability. We want to know what is around the corner at all times. And for the most part, things do turn out how we predict, but when things go awry, panic ensues and we can get caught up in catastrophic thinking. Playing  out the worst outcome, in our head, in a endless loop . This is human nature.

So what can you do when you cannot change the event:  flat tire , broken washer, large vet bill.  You lean into, and focus on how grateful you currently are.  By using gratitude as a tool to change your perspective on life.  Ok so you have a flat tire on the side of the road. Realize and call attention in your mind to the fact that you did not get into a car wreck when the tire blew.  Be grateful that you most likely have a car jack and spare tire available to you.  Be grateful you have a phone to call a tow truck.  Be grateful you even have a car to get you from point A to point B.  By changing your perspective and focusing on what you are grateful for, you are no longer  a victim of the circumstance, you are the victor.
